Container vessel and air cargo routes from Chinese ports to India

1. The Four Ways Goods Travel

Everything that moves from a Chinese factory to an Indian warehouse uses one of four services, and the right one depends on the weight, the volume and how soon you need the goods.

This article compares the modes and their transit times. For the whole route, with ports, documents, customs clearance and a freight quote, see our shipping from China to India service page.

  • Express courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS, SF Express): door to door, customs cleared by the courier, priced per kilogram with high minimums. For samples, documents and small parcels under about 50 kg.
  • Air cargo: airport to airport on a passenger or freighter aircraft, booked through a forwarder, priced on chargeable weight. For urgent stock, electronics and goods whose value justifies the rate.
  • Sea freight, less than container load (LCL): your cartons share a container with other shippers' cargo, priced per cubic metre. For trial orders and consolidated purchases from several suppliers, typically 1 to 15 cubic metres.
  • Sea freight, full container load (FCL): a 20-foot or 40-foot container to yourself, priced per container. For regular production orders above roughly 15 cubic metres.

Rail from China to India does not exist as a commercial service; what some agents call "rail" is a sea route with inland rail haulage at the Indian end, for example Mundra to the inland container depots around Delhi.

2. Transit Times, Door to Door

Forwarders quote port-to-port or airport-to-airport time. Add the days at both ends: collection and export clearance in China, and customs, de-stuffing and delivery in India.

ModeCarrier timeAdd at each endRealistic door to door
Express courier2 to 4 daysPickup same or next day; clearance by the courier3 to 6 days
Air cargo1 to 3 days in the air2 to 3 days export side, 2 to 4 days Indian customs and delivery6 to 10 days
Sea LCL14 to 22 days on the waterConsolidation wait of up to a week; CFS de-stuffing in India4 to 6 weeks
Sea FCL14 to 18 days from South China to the west coastStuffing and export declaration; customs and haulage in India3 to 4 weeks

Ocean times are longest from Ningbo and Shanghai to the west coast (about three weeks on the water) and shortest from Shenzhen and Guangzhou to Chennai. Sailings slow down in the weeks before Chinese New Year and around the two Canton Fair sessions, when space is tight; book earlier in those months.

3. How Each Mode Is Priced

Air is priced on chargeable weight: the greater of the gross weight and the volumetric weight, which is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6,000. A carton of pillows is charged far above what it weighs; a carton of motors is charged on the scale.

LCL is priced per cubic metre (or per tonne where cargo is dense), usually with a one-cubic-metre minimum, plus the consolidator's handling at origin and the container freight station (CFS) charges at destination. These destination charges catch first-time importers out: they are billed in India after arrival and can rival the ocean freight on small shipments.

FCL is priced per container: the ocean freight, a fuel surcharge, terminal handling at both ports, documentation, and inland haulage to your city. A 20-foot container holds about 33 cubic metres in theory and about 28 in practice; a 40-foot high-cube about 76 and 68.

Which party pays which leg is set by the Incoterm on your invoice. On EXW you arrange everything from the factory gate; on FOB the supplier delivers the goods on board at the Chinese port and you pay the ocean leg and everything in India; on CIF the supplier pays the ocean freight and insurance to the Indian port but you still pay Indian charges and duty. The shipping from China to India guide sets these out with examples.

4. Which Mode for Which Order

  • Samples and anything under 50 kg: express courier. The per-kilogram rate is high, but there is no forwarder, no CFS and no separate customs broker.
  • 50 to 300 kg and the customer is waiting: air cargo, unless the volume is large for the weight.
  • 1 to 15 cubic metres: LCL. Ask the quotation to show the destination CFS charges, because they decide whether LCL is really cheaper.
  • Above about 15 cubic metres: compare LCL and a 20-foot container. When the LCL total approaches the container rate, take the container: it is faster, your cargo is not handled with others', and the destination charges are lower per cubic metre.

The China to India shipping cost calculator compares the four modes for your cargo's weight, volume and ports, using reference rates we revise from forwarder quotations.

5. Ports and Routes for Indian Importers

Guangdong factories (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan) ship from Shenzhen's Yantian and Shekou terminals or Guangzhou's Nansha. Zhejiang factories and the Yiwu market ship from Ningbo, with Shanghai as the alternative. On the Indian side, Nhava Sheva (JNPT) serves Mumbai and the west, Mundra serves the north with rail to the inland depots at Tughlakabad and Dadri, Chennai serves the south, and Kolkata the east. Choose the Indian port by where your warehouse is: a cheaper ocean rate to the wrong port is lost to trucking.

6. The Documents Every Shipment Needs

From the supplier: the commercial invoice, the packing list and the bill of lading (sea) or air waybill (air), plus a certificate of origin where your product needs one. From you, before the goods sail: a valid Importer-Exporter Code from DGFT, GST registration, and an AD code registered at the port of import on ICEGATE. Your customs broker files the Bill of Entry on ICEGATE against the import general manifest the carrier lodges; duty is paid online and the goods are released on "out of charge". Regulated goods such as electronics under BIS or toys need their certification before shipment, not after arrival. The import from China to India guide lists the registrations in order.

If you buy through our China sourcing service, the forwarder, the export declaration and the Indian customs broker are coordinated as part of the order, and the freight is quoted at cost beside the goods.

Common Inquiries

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does sea shipping take from China to India?

Port to port, about 14 to 18 days from Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Nhava Sheva or Mundra, 12 to 16 days to Chennai, and about three weeks from Ningbo or Shanghai to the west coast. Allow another one to two weeks for stuffing, customs and delivery at the two ends.

Is air freight always faster?

In the air, yes: one to three days. Door to door it is usually six to ten days once export handling, Indian customs and delivery are counted, against three to six days by express courier for small parcels.

When does a full container become cheaper than LCL?

Usually somewhere between 12 and 18 cubic metres, depending on the lane and the destination CFS charges. Ask for both quotations and compare the totals including Indian charges, not the ocean freight alone.

Can goods come from China to India by rail or road?

No commercial rail or road service runs between the two countries. Rail appears only at the Indian end, from Mundra or Nhava Sheva to inland container depots.
