Yiwu to India Shipping: Consolidation, Ports and Timelines
How goods from many Yiwu stalls become one shipment to India: consolidation warehouse, export declaration, Ningbo or Shanghai, LCL or a container, timelines.

1. Why Shipping from Yiwu Is Different
A factory order ships from one address with one invoice. A Yiwu order does not: a buyer who spends four days in the Yiwu International Trade City may place orders with thirty or forty stalls, each delivering cartons on its own day, with its own packing and its own idea of labelling. Shipping from Yiwu is therefore first a logistics problem inside the city, and only then a freight problem. Yiwu is inland, in Zhejiang province, about two to three hours by road from the port of Ningbo; nothing sails from Yiwu itself.
2. The Consolidation Warehouse
Every serious Yiwu buyer uses a consolidation warehouse, either their agent's or a forwarder's. As each stall delivers, the warehouse signs for the cartons against the order, counts them, checks for damage and obvious shortages, and stores them until the last supplier has delivered. Then the whole purchase is measured, palletised or shrink-wrapped as needed, marked with your consignee marks, and either loaded into your own container at the warehouse or trucked as LCL to the consolidator's station at the port.
Three things decide whether this goes well: that every stall is given the warehouse address and your order number at the time of purchase, that someone checks the goods before they are sealed in a container, and that the warehouse produces a single packing list that matches the invoices. The Yiwu sourcing agent guide explains who usually does this work and what it costs.
3. Export Declaration for Market Goods
Goods bought from market stalls are exported under China's market procurement trade arrangement, designed for exactly this case: many small suppliers, one consignment, declared through a registered market operator or trading agent rather than by each stall. Your agent or forwarder handles the declaration and the export documents. For the Indian side you need a commercial invoice and packing list that reconcile to the shipment, with product descriptions detailed enough for your customs broker to classify every item; "general merchandise" is not a description Indian customs accepts.
4. Ningbo or Shanghai: Which Port
The shipping from China to India guide covers the ports in detail. Ningbo-Zhoushan is the natural port for Yiwu cargo: it is closer, has frequent sailings to India and handles a large share of Zhejiang's exports. Shanghai is the alternative when a particular sailing or carrier suits better. Both reach Nhava Sheva in roughly three weeks on the water, Mundra in a similar time, and Chennai a few days less. Your forwarder chooses between them by the vessel schedule for the week your cargo is ready; the trucking difference is small.
5. LCL or Your Own Container
Most first Yiwu trips produce between five and twenty cubic metres: too much for air, often too little for a container. LCL is priced per cubic metre with handling at both ends; a 20-foot container is priced as a unit and holds about 28 cubic metres of mixed cartons in practice. As the volume passes about 15 cubic metres, compare the two totals including the Indian CFS charges that LCL attracts. Buyers who return each season usually plan purchases to fill a container, because the per-cubic-metre cost falls and the cargo travels sealed from the warehouse to the Indian depot. The shipping cost calculator compares both for your volume and ports.
6. A Realistic Timeline
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Stalls deliver to the warehouse after the market visit | 3 to 10 days, longer for printed or customised goods |
| Checking, packing list, container loading or LCL hand-over | 2 to 4 days |
| Trucking to Ningbo and export declaration | 2 to 3 days |
| On the water to the Indian west coast | about 3 weeks |
| Indian customs, de-stuffing (LCL) and delivery | 4 to 8 days |
From the last day in the market to the goods in your warehouse, plan on six to eight weeks. Around Chinese New Year the market closes for two to three weeks and nothing is delivered, so purchases made in January often ship in late February.
7. Arrival in India
Your customs broker files the Bill of Entry on ICEGATE from the invoice and packing list, so their quality decides how smoothly clearance goes. Mixed market cargo attracts attention when descriptions are vague or values look low; a clear packing list with quantities, materials and unit prices per item avoids most queries. Products under Indian quality control orders (toys, certain electronics, some household goods) need the required certification before arrival. The import from China to India guide lists the registrations and the clearance steps. Our Yiwu sourcing service runs the consolidation, the export declaration and the shipment to your port as part of the buying trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does cargo ship from Yiwu directly?
No. Yiwu is inland; goods are consolidated in a Yiwu warehouse and trucked about two to three hours to Ningbo, or to Shanghai, where they are loaded on the vessel.
How long does it take from Yiwu to India?
From the last market day to delivery in India, usually six to eight weeks: a week or two for stalls to deliver and the shipment to be packed, two to three days to the port, about three weeks at sea, and about a week for customs and delivery.
Should I ship LCL or book a container?
Under about 15 cubic metres LCL is usual; above that compare both totals including Indian CFS charges. A 20-foot container holds about 28 cubic metres of mixed cartons in practice.
Who exports goods bought from market stalls?
A registered market operator or trading agent declares the consolidated shipment under China's market procurement trade arrangement; your agent or forwarder arranges it. You receive one invoice and packing list for the whole shipment.
