Yiwu International Trade City and Guangzhou wholesale market compared

1. The Short Answer

Go to Yiwu if you buy many different small products (gifts, toys, stationery, accessories, household items, festival goods) in modest quantities per item, and want to fill one container with many lines. Go to Guangzhou if you buy deeper in one category (garments and fabric, leather goods, toys and gifts, cosmetics and packaging) or want to reach factories, and especially if your trip can match a Canton Fair phase. If you are an importer of mixed goods with a category focus, one trip can cover both. This comparison is from our team in Karol Bagh, Delhi, built on the sources listed at the end.

2. Yiwu: One Market, Many Products, Small Quantities

Yiwu, in Zhejiang province, is built around Yiwu International Trade City (the Futian market), a set of linked market districts in which each shop shows a supplier's range. By the trade guides and Chinese media we cross-checked, the districts are broadly organised as follows: District 1 toys, jewellery and ornaments; District 2 hardware, tools, luggage, kitchenware and umbrellas; District 3 stationery, office goods, cosmetics and garment accessories; District 4 socks, knitwear, daily necessities, shoes and belts; District 5 imported goods, bedding, textiles and car accessories. A further market building, the Global Digital Trade Center, opened in October 2025 with sections such as fashion jewellery, trend toys and smart devices.

What makes Yiwu different is how you buy. Shops take orders for many products in small quantities, and the city's export system is designed for it: China's "market procurement trade" export mode, created for markets like Yiwu, lets a container of many mixed products be declared together. In practice Indian buyers walk the districts with an agent, order from many shops, and the goods are consolidated in a warehouse and shipped as LCL or a mixed container. The Yiwu market guide, the Yiwu agent guide and Yiwu to India shipping cover each step. The market is closed for about two weeks around Chinese New Year; plan around it.

3. Guangzhou: Specialist Markets, Factories and the Canton Fair

Guangzhou, in Guangdong province, has no single market but many specialist wholesale markets: for garments, the Baima, Shahe and Zhanxi Road clusters; for toys, gifts and stationery, the Yide Road area; and for fabric and trims, the Zhongda market cluster in Haizhu district. Nearby cities add their own: Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei for electronics, Foshan's Lecong for furniture, and the manufacturing base of Dongguan.

The difference from Yiwu is that Guangzhou puts you closer to the factories of the Pearl River Delta, and it hosts the Canton Fair at the Pazhou complex twice a year. The 140th session runs in three phases: 15–19 October 2026 (electronics, machinery, hardware, lighting, new energy), 23–27 October (home, building materials, furniture, gifts) and 31 October–4 November (toys, baby, fashion, textiles, health). The Guangzhou city guide covers the markets and hotels.

5. Getting There From India

Guangzhou has direct flights from India: IndiGo flies non-stop daily from Delhi and from Kolkata, and China Southern resumed Guangzhou–Delhi flights in September 2026. Yiwu has no direct flights from India. Most Indian buyers fly to Shanghai or Hangzhou and take the high-speed train (Shanghai to Yiwu is roughly one and a half to two hours), or combine it with Guangzhou, from where the high-speed train takes around six to seven hours with only a few direct trains a day, or a domestic flight. Both trips need a China business (M) visa; plan for about 3–5 weeks, as our visa processing time guide explains.

6. How to Choose

  1. How many different products do you buy? Dozens of lines, small quantities each: Yiwu. A few lines, larger quantities: Guangzhou and the factories.
  2. Do you need the maker? Custom products, your own brand or specification: Guangzhou and the surrounding factory towns, or the Canton Fair.
  3. When can you travel? October–November or April–May: plan around the Canton Fair in Guangzhou. Avoid Yiwu around Chinese New Year.
  4. Does your product need Indian certification? For BIS-controlled goods (many electronics, toys) you need a factory with a licence for your model, which is easier to establish with a manufacturer than with a market shop. See the BIS guide.

7. Doing Both in One Trip

Many mixed-goods importers do both: Guangzhou first for the Canton Fair phase or the category markets, then Yiwu by train or a domestic flight for the small-quantity lines, and home from Shanghai or back via Guangzhou. Allow travel days between the cities, and keep the consolidation in one place so the goods ship together. The China business travel guide covers both cities, and our China business travel service plans the visa, flights, hotels, trains and market days for both cities.

No. Fly to Shanghai or Hangzhou and take the high-speed train, or combine Yiwu with Guangzhou, which has direct flights from Delhi and Kolkata.

How far is Yiwu from Guangzhou?

About 1,170 km by rail. The high-speed train takes around six to seven hours, with only a few direct trains a day; many buyers fly between the two.

Yes. Attend your Canton Fair phase in Guangzhou, then travel to Yiwu by train or a domestic flight. Allow a travel day and plan the consolidation so goods from both ship together.
